- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 large egg yolk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon red food coloring
- 1/2 teaspoon vinegar
- 8 ounces full-fat cream cheese
- 2 1/2 – 3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1–2 tablespoons cream
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
- Whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl.
- Cream the softened butter with granulated and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg, egg yolk, vanilla extract, red food coloring, and vinegar until well blended.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a consistent dough forms without streaks of flour.
- Spread the dough evenly in the prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until edges pull away and a toothpick comes out clean.
- Allow to cool in the pan before making the frosting.
- Beat together softened cream cheese and butter until smooth, then add powdered sugar and mix until desired thickness.
- Frost the cooled bars and slice into squares.
Notes
For softer bars, ensure to cream the butter and sugar well to incorporate air.
Adjust the amount of powdered sugar in the frosting to taste and preference for sweetness.
Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to five days, or refrigerate for up to a week.
